*  The annual air charge maintenance is not necessary, unless your pressure tank is HOLLOW on the inside where air and water come in contact with each other. There are a variety of old style tanks like this, be sure yours is hollow before proceeding.

*In an old-style hollow tank, over time the water absorbs the air which causes the pressure switch to cycle on and off more often killing the life of the pump. The air added acts as a buffer which allows the pump to shut off and cool down appropriately allowing optimum pump life.

Signs and Air Charge Information

Annual Air Charge Maintenance: Not Required.

Diagnostics

1. Shut power OFF to the well.

2. Close the "shut off" valve to house plumbing.

3. Drain the tank empty of Water.

   a. Open boiler drain with a hose to a drain or outside.

(if not possible then use a bath tub or sink *skip step 2)

   b. An Air Compressor is needed to force all of the water out of tank.

   c. Until air begins to exit hose.

4. Close valve and continue adding air charging the tank to 25 PSI.

   a. Or releasing air to 25 PSI

5. Turn Power back ON.

* In order to check air pressure correctly, a tire pressure gauge is needed and the system must be shut off and drained down completely.

- In a 30-50 PSI cycle, up to 25 PSI of air is optimum.
- In a 40-60 PSI cycle, up to 35 PSI of air is optimum.

Signs that maintenance is needed.

Annual Air Charge Maintenance: Required.

Air Bladder Tanks

Old-Style Hollow Tanks

Air Charge Directions

* The air bladder tank separates the air and water and does not require annual maintenance. However, over time the bladder can rupture ultimately causing damage to the pump. No repairs can be made if this is the case, the air bladder tank must be replaced.

* Air can escape and may need to be added to these tanks. Depending on cycle settings the amount of air needed varies.
